The brick building used to
be a furniture factory that my father worked in. Now it's a trendy knick-knack shop
called the Treasure Shoppe. When I was young, the Treasure Shoppe was a little store
down the street and the brick building was empty. The white structure nearby is the
town's band-stand. And, yes, bands do perform there.

Right there by the Treasure
Shoppe is the village Square, complete with cannons and memorials to brave dead guys.
This, too, has remained unchanged lo these many years.

This is
the village of Valatie (Va lay' sha)
The next town over from Kinderhook

Years before I was born, it
was said that people lived in Kinderhook and worked in Valatie (this was before everyone
started working in Albany). The fact remains that Kinderhook was primarily an
upscale bedroom community and Valatie was a mill town.

At the far end of Main
Street, at the junction with Rt. 203, is the Valatiekill (translation: Little Falls Creek)
where the locals swim. If you look close, you can see indigenous life forms climbing
on the rocks.
