Stuyvesant Falls and
the Sand Bar

About a mile from my boyhood home is the tiny town of Stuyvesant Falls.

Stuyvesant Falls, NY
This is the town . . .

Don't blilnk, you'll miss it.
. . . all of it.

And what does one do in such a small town for fun?
Mostly, we swam at a bend in the Kinderhook Creek
(Pronounced Crick) known to the locals as The Sand Bar.

The Dam, Upper Falls and the Sand Bar
The Sand Bar is the sandy beach area below the Dam
and next to The Cliff.

The Sand Bar
This is the beach area, scene of much debauchery during my misspent youth.  As you can see, it is still a popular swimming and sun-bathing spot.

The Dam and 'The Pillars'
Beyond the Sand Bar is the Dam, built on what was known as Upper Falls.  At the end of the Dam is an overflow gate bounded by two massive, concrete pillars.  As a boy, my friends as I used to jump off the rocks below the Dam.  The bigger kids jumped off 'The Pillars.'

The Cliff--looking down
Ringing the area near the Dam is a tall shelf of shale we
called, 'The Cliff.'  There is a single spot where, if you get a good
running start, you can clear the underwater rocks and land
in a very deep, but narrow, hole.  The drop is 45 feet.  I jumped it
once and nearly hit the rocks.  Last week, Mitchell made the jump and
he, too, narrowly missed the rock edge.  Neither of us have plans to do it again.
Many years ago, a friend of mine jumped from here and did not clear the
rocks.  They used grappling hooks to dredge his body out of the hole.
