This is the beach area,
scene of much debauchery during my misspent youth. As you can see, it is still a
popular swimming and sun-bathing spot.

Beyond the Sand Bar is the
Dam, built on what was known as Upper Falls. At the end of the Dam is an overflow
gate bounded by two massive, concrete pillars. As a boy, my friends as I used to
jump off the rocks below the Dam. The bigger kids jumped off 'The Pillars.'

Ringing the area near the
Dam is a tall shelf of shale we
called, 'The Cliff.' There is a single spot where, if you get a good
running start, you can clear the underwater rocks and land
in a very deep, but narrow, hole. The drop is 45 feet. I jumped it
once and nearly hit the rocks. Last week, Mitchell made the jump and
he, too, narrowly missed the rock edge. Neither of us have plans to do it
again.
Many years ago, a friend of mine jumped from here and did not clear the
rocks. They used grappling hooks to dredge his body out of the hole.
